Elmwood Mine, Carthage, Central Tennessee Ba-F-Pb-Zn District, Smith Co., Tennessee
This one is kind of a sleeper. It looks just like a lot of Elmwood Fluorite pieces: faint yellow transparent core with light violet exterior, on siliceous limestone flake, with mixed Dolomite/Sphalerite overcoat. It's when you look at the vertices of the big (3 inches across) cube that you notice strange growth figures and changes in transparency. What makes this interesting (to some) is that it seems to represent an intermediate form between "normal" cube habit and the exotic "scepter" form, which shows an etched interior and three intact cube faces. The gray matrix, visible on the back, is thickly encrusted with small and colorless Dolomites of good form and sprinkled across the Dolomite are dozens of reddish pinpoint Sphalerites, small enough to show color. Condition of the piece is pristine.
Overall measurements: 6 x 6 x 2 inches (15.2 x 15.2 x 5.1 cm).
Provenance: Jim Duncan [Hoppel # D1359]
