"There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." - (Hamlet 1.5)

Shakespeare wasn't specifically thinking about this specimen when he penned those lines, but it fits. The enigma conjured up by this wildly "etched" Fluorite cube can be summed up in one word - "How?" How can you dissolve the greater portion of a solid crystal of Fluorite, removing only the colorless Fluorite and leaving the thin 'skin' of purple Fluorite intact? Originally, this specimen was a cubic crystal over 5 inches (13.1 cm) on edge. The "edges" are still largely intact. The colorless interior has been dissolved, and this dissolution is not uniform, but rather seems to be controlled by crystal structure, resulting in "ribs" of transparent Fluorite. The remaining cube face is light purple and spotted with tiny inclusions too small to be identified by eye. Its luster is unaffected by whatever "ate" the rest of the crystal. What's left of the crystal is in excellent condition. It comes with a custom labeled acrylic base.
