Description

    FLUORITE
Denton Mine, Goose Creek Mine Group, Harris Creek Sub-District, Illinois-Kentucky Fluorspar Dist., Hardin Co., Illinois, USA

The range of colors shown by Illinois Fluorite is unmatched anywhere in the world. Many of the specimens from there contain more than one color and in some cases many more hues are evident. Almost all of the Illinois specimens exhibit simple, cubic form, but those cubes can reach several inches on edge - this incomplete one is almost 4.5 inches on edge and it displays an absolute stunning red color when back lit. Color presentation in Fluorite is very similar to that in Tourmaline, because distinct bands of color interact in different ways, depending on the type of light and orientation of the light source. Here, the red hue is accompanied by a lot of the usual purple. Additionally, there is also a bit of blue and yellow present. The crystal faces are graced with hundreds of growth "hillocks," giving an interesting twist to faces that would normally be described as "glassy." Other than a couple of nicks to one edge, the cube is in excellent shape with a small amount of an unidentified white mineral near the base.
    Overall Measurements: 4.4 x 4 x 2.9 inches (11.25 x 10.23 x 7.47 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.
