Description

    FLUORITE
Deer Trail Mine, Mt. Baldy District, Cottonwood Creek, Tushar Mountains, Piute Co., Utah, USA

A prospector out searching for a fresh venison dinner made use of one of the many deer trails that usually prove to be the easiest way to get around in the mountainous terrain south of Marysvale, Utah. The trail he was following crossed a ledge of white limestone with a vein of Galena outcropping in it. The deer hunt was abruptly terminated and a mining project began. The Galena yielded several hundred tons of Lead, Silver and Gold ore. Later on, various groups worked the deposit and in fact, it is still being worked today. It was during the later period of operation that dodecahedral Fluorite crystals of a beautiful sea-blue color were first taken out by miners and taken home by collectors. Since then, specimen production has been curtailed by management - a situation not likely to change any time soon. This "sugar" Quartz plate sports a herd of more or less spherical Fluorite crystals boiling over the top of the specimen and down the front side. The largest of the Fluorites measures 1.25 inches (3.1 cm) and there are many about the same size. Transparency is actually quite good but the complex faces on the Fluorite tend to obscure this fact. The condition of the Fluorite and the matrix plate is excellent with no observable damage.
    Overall measurements: 8 x 6.5 x 2 inches (20.3 x 16.5 x 5.1 cm).

Provenance: Keith Proctor [Hoppel # D0064]
