Description

    FLUORITE
Akchatau #2 Mine, Akchatau, Karagandy Province (Qaragandy Oblysy; Karaganda Oblast'), Kazakhstan

Fluorite coming in a very wide variety of colors is well known, purple being one of the most frequently encountered. The Fluorite from the Akchatau Tungsten - Molybdenum Mine in Kazakhstan has the distinction of showing the darkest purple of all the localities normally encountered by collectors. This exceptionally large specimen is from the famous Vladimir Pelepenko Collection. It was mined in the early 1990s and consists of 50 or so cubic crystals up to 1 inch (2.57 cm) on edge that almost completely cover the top surface of a flat Quartz and Pyrite matrix. The faces of the Fluorite cubes show a myriad of beautiful and complex growth figures, lending a strange luster to what are normally simple planar surfaces. Also in evidence, is a veritable sea of small, stubby Quartz crystals of a gray color. This impressive specimen is in pristine condition. On the bottom is the accession number "588." Minor Note: The Pelepenko Collection was the first major collection to emerge from the former Soviet Union in modern times. Many of the specimens from that collection are still considered to be the best known examples from this part of the world, possibly including this one.
    Overall Measurements: 11.25 x 7.5 x 2.5 inches (28.58 x 19.05 x 6.35 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: North Star Minerals, ex. Vladimir Pelepenko Collection [Hoppel #D2206]
