Elmwood Mine, Carthage, Central Tennessee Ba-F-Pb-Zn District, Smith Co., Tennessee, USA

Probably the most unusual specimen in the Culberson Collection is this four-component aggregate: featuring cubes of Fluorite up to 2.25 inches (5.7 cm) on edge along with Baryte, Sphalerite, and minor Calcite. The Fluorite is quite interesting for its unique color and luster. The simple cubic crystals possess pale yellow, almost colorless, cores that are partially overcoated by violet, almost druzy areas that contrast in a subtle fashion with the glassy uncoated sections of the same crystals. This color/luster pattern is normally seen in much smaller specimens of loose crystals. Here, the rather expansive Fluorite group is spotted with globular Baryte clusters of the typical granular surface texture and cream coloration. Peeking out from one corner of the piece is an exposure of shiny brown crystals of Sphalerite. To complete the ensemble, there are several small and colorless crystals of Calcite, showing the typical scalenohedral form of Elmwood examples. Imperfections are minimal and confined to the lower edges of the piece, leading us to believe that it is in pristine condition. Comes complete with a custom acrylic base.
