FLUORITE - ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES
Bingham, Hansonburg District, Socorro County, New Mexico
The mines around Bingham, New Mexico have provided a wide variety of collector minerals over the years: Cerussite, Anglesite, Linarite, Galena, Brochantite and Fluorite to name a few. The Fluorite is well known for its sky-blue color but Bingham Fluorite suffers from being a bit on the small side; as Fluorites go. Recently, one of the mine operators discovered an exception to that rule. He found a sizable matrix specimen in a cavity, that was covered with crystals up to 1 ¾ inches in size. Not only were there large crystals but there were blue crystals on one side and purple ones on the other. Quite a find. The Fluorite cubes are arrayed in roughly linear fashion around and across the surface of a limestone slab. They are embedded in a layer of scintillating, druzy white Quartz crystals that provide a striking contrast to the darker colors of the Fluorite. Damage is minimal due to the care used in removing this singular specimen. This is one of the finest, if not the finest, specimen of its size ever to come from the district. 19 ½ x 14 x 8 ½ inches.
