Fluorite on Amethyst
Riemvasmaak, Kakamas, ZF Mgcawu District, Northern Cape Province, South Africa

"Tying together of leather thongs/strips" may seem light-years away from this Fluorite and Quartz specimen, but that's what "Riemvasmaak" means in the local patois. This area of the Northern Cape Province is a wild area of granite canyons, hidden hot springs and is the site where these bright green Fluorite octahedrons come from. It is also home to the San people: the original inhabitants of southern Africa, commonly called "Bushmen." This example is exceptional for several reasons. To start with, the major octahedron is larger than average for this locality and is complete, with no damage. Ditto for the smaller octahedron attached to it. Secondarily, the Fluorites are emerging from a very atypical matrix consisting of euhedral Quartz crystals, whose color varies from pale violet Amethyst to colorless. Druzy Quartz crystals immediately adjacent to the Fluorite have been selectively removed to expose more of the emerald green crystal. The overall condition of this specimen is excellent and it comes with a custom base.
