Description

Fluorite (Dissolution Corner)
Elmwood Mine, Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee, USA
7.7 x 7.5 x 5.4 cm (3.03 x 2.95 x 2.13 in)

Much of the Elmwood Mine's fame is derived from the large quantities of world-class Fluorite and Calcite specimens. Amongst these, however, are a handful of unique Fluorite specimens that have been partially etched away by super-heated fluids while the crystals were still in their underground pockets, resulting in what are known as "dissolution corners." This is one such piece, presenting a sharply formed cubic Fluorite crystal that has been naturally dissolved, leaving an extremely three-dimensional, geometric landscape across the crystal's interior. Characteristic of most dissolution corners, the Fluorite has a single transparent, near-colorless "cone" that juts upward from the largest remaining corner; smaller "cones" and fields of heavy etching are visible across the rest of the interior. Presented at the top of the Fluorite is a white, ball-shaped association of Baryte with a handful of root-beer colored crystals of Sphalerite.
