Green Monster Mine, Green Monster Mountain, Prince of Wales Island, Ketchikan, Prince of Wales-Outer Ketchikan Borough, Alaska, USA

The excavators of the wonderful Epidotes of the Green Monster Mine pay in blood for every one of these glistening treasures. Hordes of mosquitoes exact their blood-tax from all who try their luck at specimen recovery here and although fine Epidotes are not guaranteed, the "mozzies" are. Single crystals and small groups are the norm at the Green Monster, a fact that makes this example a much more uncommon and desirable piece. Deep green, striated Epidote prisms of brilliant luster are intermixed with colorless Quartz crystals in a random mélange of sparkling reflections. The largest Epidote measures 2 inches (just under 5 cm) from base to tip and several, including the 2nd largest, are double terminated. The matrix is a mixed Garnet and Epidote conglomeration typical of the locality. Condition is pristine, which is rare for a group this large and complex. There aren't many Green Monster specimens on a par with this one - it is a treasure.
    Overall measurements: 5.5 x 3.5 x 3.5 inches (14 x 8.9 x 8.9 cm).

    Provenance: Collector's Edge [Hoppel # D0312]

    Estimate: $25,000 - $35,000.
