Mina La Gringa, Chiurucu, Huallanca, Bolognesi Department, Peru
Epidote; a common Silicate mineral is present almost everywhere. Unfortunately, about 99.999% of it is singularly unattractive and not in the form of crystals. Crystalline Epidote occurs in a number of habits: short and stubby, long and thin, opaque and transparent. What it doesn't like to do is form short, needlelike crystals all over something else, which is exactly what we have here. Chemically speaking; it was bribed into doing something it wasn't supposed to do. The result is a dense coating of shining, olive green short needles covering a knob of colorless calcite. The Calcite is understandable; Mina La Gringa is a typical Garnet-Epidote-Magnetite
Skarn, which means that there should be a lot of Calcite available to grow things on. The rounded groups of Epidote show little or no damage. Condition is fine to excellent. An odd, intriguing and aesthetic specimen. 3 x 2 3/8 x 1 inch.
