Description

EPIDOTE
Knappenwand, Knappenwand Area, Untersulzbach Valley, Hohe Tauern, Salzburg, Austria

Strahlers, as the professional mineral collectors of the Alps are known, have been fascinated by the brilliantly lustrous groups of Epidote crystals that occur in a cliff deposit, high in the Alps near Salzburg. Like most of the pieces from this locality, the specimen seen here features multiple, parallel Epidotes, up to 3.125 inches (8 cm) in length, with chisel shaped terminations with the typical olive-green color and bright luster. In pristine condition, with two matte areas that are pre-mining in origin. Minor Byssolite in sheltered corners. This excellent specimen bears an accession # 407.90 in European notation. As far as we can tell the specimen was allegedly mined by one Andreas Bergman in 1879 and sold to the Archduke of Saxony in 1881. The Archdukes collection was also allegedly sold to the Kosnar/Lidstrom consortium in 1971, which placed it with the Hoppel Collection.
Overall measurements: 3.75 x 4 x 1 inches (9.5 x 10.2 x 2.5 cm). Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: Ex. R.A. Kosnar Collection [Hoppel Catalog # D1754]

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
