Unknown Pocket, possibly unnamed or pre-1999
Pederneira Mine, São José da Safira, Doce Valley, Minas Gerais, Brazil

International travelers are aware of the current frenzy to claim national ownership of the most elegant and vertiginous of what used to be called 'skyscrapers.' This term has been rendered quaint and archaic by the towering "new architecture" represented by Dubai's Burj Khalifa and the soon to be opened Shanghai Tower in China. The construction of this elegant bit of gem architecture preceded those constructions by many, many millions of years. Proudly arising from a jumble of short to medium length crystals, many doubly-terminated and some showing curved prism faces characteristic of "bent" Tourmalines, is a veritable skyscraper of a Tourmaline, towering some 6.29 inches (16 cm) over the haphazard jumble clustered far below. All of the crystals making up the group show pink areas at both ends with varying amounts of medium blue green intermingled with colorless material in the middle sections of all. Likewise, all of the various prism faces show identical fine striations and glassy luster. Final stages in the crystallization process deposited a thin coating of pink over the blue green and colorless zones of the crystal and completed the performance by leaving a smoky, cranberry 'cap,' but only on the pedion terminations of the crystals. There is a repair to one 'sidecar' crystal; otherwise, all else is in pristine condition. It comes with custom base.
