Naipa Mine, Alto Ligonha District, Zambezia Province, Mozambique

Before the FRELIMO got to slugging it out with RENAMO and the place was still kind of run by the Portuguese, there were many fine and large Tourmalines coming from the artisanal mines of the Alto Ligonha of Mozambique. That is the period when this beauty emigrated from the territory. Now that the organized killing has stopped, we can only hope that more treasures of a similar nature will appear. This very rare matrix specimen was mined in 1950s/1960s and passed through several private collections before Herr Wagner acquired it. There are five crystals in total - four in one cluster. The tallest crystal is 2.08 x 0.98 inches 5.3 cm high by 2.5 cm across. There is a second, multi-crystal group of three, slightly smaller prisms. All Tourmalines rise from a matrix of Quartz, Lepidolite, and Cleavelandite, along with two euhedral Quartz crystals gracing the upper surface. The luster on the crystal sides is brilliant, while the flat terminal faces show a strange matte surface texture. All of the Tourmalines show blue green body color with deep "azurite" blue terminations and great transparency. When lit from above, the specimen shows an unearthly deep blue glow, which is not at all apparent when lit from the sides. Condition is excellent to pristine with only the usual tiny nicks to terminations and expert repair to one of the Tourmalines.
    Overall measurements: 5.1 x 3.3 x 4.5 inches (13 x 8.5 x 11.5 cm)
