    Description

    ELBAITE TOURMALINE
Paprok Mine, Kamdesh District, Nuristan Province, Afghanistan

Certain minerals are best obtained outside their country of origin since the local miners/brokers/middle-men often take a dim view of foreigners trying to circumvent the normal supply chain by buying them in country. This is particularly serious when most of the locals are armed, touchy, and involved in various forms of war. Roads are few and primitive in nature, and many specimens are carried on the backs of burros and people in order to reach navigable roads. Although the locals prefer lighter specimens, they will on occasion, haul a multi-pound specimen across miles of rugged terrain to get it to market. Chances are this specimen made just that sort of journey on its way to the outside world.

Now that it is here, we can see that it is composed of two types of Feldspar, one is the blocky Baveno twinned Microcline that serves as the host for many glassy Tourmaline prisms of predominately bubble-gum pink hue and the other type forms the roughly spherical aggregates of bladed Cleavelandite that pepper the back and lower areas of this massive specimen. The main Tourmaline group is around 4.5 inches (11.43 cm) in height and it extends almost from the base to the tip of the specimen. It features a flat termination and there are numerous secondary, sub-parallel Tourmaline crystals, some of which are double terminated and there is a single, blocky Quartz crystal off to one side of the base. Condition and luster are both quite excellent with only minor nicks. Comes with an acrylic base.
    Overall measurements: 6 x 5 x 4 inches (15.2 x 12.7 x 10.2 cm).

Provenance: Minerals America [Hoppel # D2205]
