Cruzeiro Mine, São José da Safira, Doce Valley, Minas Gerais, Brazil

A mountainous, pyramidal pair of Quartz crystals provides an aerie for the unique group of Tourmaline crystals that seem poised to launch into flight. The geometric "eagle" waiting to soar is composed of a series of parallel prisms with a greenish core and a pink exterior grading to faint green at the "beak." All of the prisms of the group are doubly-terminated and the assemblage measures 3.74 x 2.44 x 0.75 inches (9.5 x 6.2 x 1.9 cm) thick. With regards to the Quartz crystals, it should be noted that it is actually one Quartz crystal with a deep chasm transecting it, with a single Tourmaline crystal flooring the bottom of the notch that prevented any further Quartz growth beyond it. The "Eagle" spans the gap and is attached on both sides. In addition, numerous other Tourmaline prisms are embedded in the Quartz or have left traces of prior contact. There are approximately five secondary Tourmaline crystals evident, none of which are of major significance. There are also several off-white to tan Lepidolite groups on the lower parts of the Quartz. Luster is good, and there is some chatoyancy due to microscopic tubular inclusions. Minor nicking to the edges of the main crystal and some breaks to secondary Tourmaline crystals are present; otherwise, it is in excellent condition.
    Overall measurements: 4.5 x 4.1 x 3.5 inches (11.4 x 10.5 x 9 cm)

    Estimate: $15,000 - $25,000.
