Description

    DIOPTASE
Mindouli, Mindouli District, Pool Department, Republic of Congo (Congo-Brazzaville)

Back in the late 1940s and continuing up until the late 1950s, there was an outcrop of Copper minerals that was mined for the red metal near the town of Mindouli. Dioptase was just one of the Copper minerals encountered in the shallow workings of the district, but is the one that collectors covet the most today, because of its very intense color. The best of the Mindouli material is very much like this "Easter Egg" - a hollow cavity or "vug" completely lined with stout and large (greater than 0.5 inches) pyramids of brilliantly lustrous Dioptase. A multitude of internal reflections within the transparent crystals show off the deep green-blue color, even in the depths of the cavity. The Dioptase lining is surrounded by a light green and deep blue layer of Plancheite and other unidentified minerals. The exterior "rind" is a classic, rusty tan matrix of limonitic gossan. This dynamic specimen is in pristine condition, with no visible imperfections. On the bottom are two accession/inventory numbers: "198" and "103H." The "103H" label indicates it was also in the Dr. Ed David Collection. The "198" corresponds to a label from the Lawrence Henry Conklin Collection that accompanies the piece.
    Overall Measurements: 4.96 x 3.69 x 3.04 inches (12.61 x 9.38 x 7.73 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: Ex. L.H. Conklin Collection, ex. Dr. Ed David Collection

    Estimate: $20,000 - $25,000.
