Tsumeb Mine (Tsumcorp Mine), Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region (Oshikoto), Namibia

Dioptase is one of the mineral equivalents of a "gateway drug": something so attractive and innocuous that unsuspecting neophytes suddenly find themselves waking up with a cabinet full of minerals and a 2nd mortgage on the house. Dioptase is that luscious. This luscious character is somewhat offset by the refusal of cameras, film and photo-shop type programs, to duplicate the color of this aesthetic outlier. Suffice it to say, if it looks good in the photo, it will look fabulous in real life. Which means that this specimen really should be seen in person. Here, colorless rhombic crystals of Calcite are draped with small, scintillating Dioptase crystals maybe 0.5-1.0 mm in diameter. The Dioptase isn't just scattered at random, but rather in clusters of crystals reposing like nickel-green 'snow' on the "top" side of the numerous Calcite rhombs. The contrast between the deep blue-green of the Dioptase and the pure white of the Calcite activates the wonder circuits of the human brain like few other things, most of them illegal. Now that Tsumeb is but a memory, this represents a chance to recreate that glorious time when the mine was producing and everyone thought it would never end. Mined in 1996, toward the end of the mines life, it is in pristine condition and is waiting to capture your eye. The label accompanying it has been cut down to prevent prior collection recognition, but it is entirely in visual accord with ones from dealer/collector: David New.
    Overall measurements: 5.75 x 5 x 3.45 inches (14.6 x 12.7 x 8.8 cm).

Provenance: Western Minerals, ex. David New Collection [Hoppel # D1698A]
