Description

    DIABOLEITE
Mammoth-St. Anthony Mine, Tiger, Pinal Co., Arizona, USA

First found in old, abandoned workings in the Mendip Hills of England, there was so little of the material found, that it wasn't until years later, when the robust specimens from Tiger appeared, that a complete description of this rare mineral was made. Like a number of copper minerals colored blue, it is necessary to study the crystal forms in order to identify the mineral correctly. In the case of Diaboleite, the bladed habit and associated minerals provide ample evidence of its identity and origin. According to an accompanying label, there is also Paralaurionite present. Under cursory examination with a loupe, we could not locate any Paralaurionite, but there does seem to be associated Cerussite, Leadhillite, and either Creaseyite or Wherryite, at bare minimum. This locality is famous for the multiplicity of species that can show up on a single specimen, and this piece seems to be a prime example of that phenomenon. The specimen appears to have been rescued from ore production inasmuch as it shows several bruised areas typical of such handling. In spite of such deficiencies, it still represents a large specimen for this mineral and an excellent example of the various accessory minerals for which this locality is known.
