Grandview (Last Chance) Mine, Grand Canyon, Coconino Co., Arizona, USA

Fuzzy, blue aggregates looking for purposes like bright blue mold cover the greater proportion of this specimen's surfaces. This relatively rare Copper mineral is confined to the "oxide zone" of Copper ore bodies where percolating, oxygen rich ground water dissolves certain minerals and re-deposits them as slightly different minerals a little further down in the ore body. Typically this process results in an orange-brown iron rich matrix referred to as a "limonitic gossan" or "gossan" for short: a slang word of the Cornish miners for this particular type of geologic evolution. The specimen seen here shows exactly that association, exhibiting an incrustation of green Malachite and blue Cyanotrichite, overcoating a warm-brown gossan matrix of iron oxides. At around 5.5 inches (13.9 cm) long, this specimen is larger than most and is in excellent condition.
    Overall measurements: 6 x 4 x 2 inches (15.2 x 10.2 x 5.1 cm). Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: Mountain Minerals, ex. Mike Groben Collection [Hoppel Catalog # D0462]

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
