Curvy Purple Fluorite on Green Fluorite
De'an Fluorite Mine, Wushan, De'an Co., Jiujiang Prefecture, Jiangxi Province, China

The wild color combinations shown by Fluorite are matched by its equally wild crystal habits. De'an Fluorite specimens continue to stretch the boundaries of what we can expect from this mineral. Very attractive blue-purple octahedrons on green have given past De'an specimens a special place in the worldwide pantheon of Fluorites. That this locality could up the ante by coming up with even more exotic forms was hardly expectable. These De'an Fluorites have curved faces and are totally unique. The crystal groups are covered with trigonal growth features that make, what should be flat surfaces bulge out, in an almost alien way. Close inspection allows the viewer to see a thin, blue outer layer, hidden by surface complexity and waxy luster, on each of the purple crystals. The matrix is a plate of sea-green Fluorite with largely octahedral faces, of a more normal type, along with an occasional cubo-octahedron. The "curved cuties" average about 1 - 1.25 inches (2.5 - 3 cm) on edge and, with the exception of a couple of breaks at the edge of the matrix, are all in pristine shape.
    Overall Measurements: 5.8 x 5.1 x 2.7 inches (14.8 x 13.0 x 6.8 cm)

Provenance: Ex. Chinese Mineral Dealer's Private Collection

    Estimate: $12,000 - $18,000.
