Cuprian Calcite/Aragonite Cast
Level 17, Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia

A long time ago in a dark, dark (and wet) place, a forest of what appears to have been Quartz crystals sprouted from a fissure wall. Once formed, changing times and chemistries ordained a new set of conditions, where Calcium Carbonate would be forced to crystallize all over the Quartz forest. And so it was. Another change in chemistry followed, and the Quartz forest vanished under the onslaught of unfriendly fluids, leaving only the crystalline crust given form by the vanished forest of Quartz. That crust of Calcite, or Aragonite, (both CaCO3) picked up hitchhikers of Copper ions; ions that became trapped in the crystal lattice of the Carbonate crust, leaving a faint blue-green hue. This coralloid mass is rather unique by Tsumeb standards and the large size allows the full impact of the form to manifest itself in a way a smaller specimen could not. There is breakage on the perimeter, but overall condition is excellent.
