Although this is a hefty specimen of Covellite, a Copper Sulfide, it was Gold that brought miners up to 11,500 feet in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado to wrest their fortunes from the cold ground. The gold was first discovered in 1870 and at one time the nearby town of Summitville boasted a population of 1500 hardy souls and nine ore mills. By 1956, the population was down to 12 miners. Summitville is now a ghost town, populated by disintegrating wooden buildings and cold winds. Undoubtedly a product of the era before open pit mining commenced, this massive chunk of bladed Covellite was most likely saved during the period when underground mining was the chosen approach to Gold recovery. The blue-black feathers of Covellite obviously represents one wall of a open vein in the ore body. The "bottom" of the specimen was the attachment point or matrix for the Covellites as they grew out from the vein wall into the open interior of the fissure. Luster is the typical metallic and iridescent version often displayed by Covellite, where a coating of a white unidentified mineral doesn't obscure it. There is a drill hole on one side of the specimen but otherwise good condition.
Overall measurements: 6 x 5 x 4 inches (15.2 x 12.7 x 10.2 cm).
