L'Etoile du Congo Mine, Lubumbashi, Katanga Copper Crescent, Katanga (Shaba), Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaïre)

The "Copper Crescent" is a term for a huge area of Katanga Province in Zaïre. There are a great number of Copper and Cobalt mines in this part of the Congo. Many of them have produced fine examples of beautiful and/or rare Copper minerals. The Cornetite of the Etoile du Congo (Star of the Congo) Mine is well known, and quite collectible, although good, undamaged specimens are at a premium. This fine Cornetite specimen shows classic botryoidal form coupled with deep blue color and a bright druzy surface. The matrix is a layered composition starting with a dark, schistose material, that grades into a bright green coating of Malachite that is overcoated with a bubbly crust of Cornetite. The Tenorite identification is tentative at best. Based on specific gravity, it is either admixed with the schistose material to a great degree or the black layer is simply: a dark schist of some sort. Condition is pristine with no observable damage.
