Description

Chrysocolla Geode Split - "Butterfly in Stone"
Artist: Bud Standley

Created by Arizona lapidary artist Bud Standley, "Butterfly in Stone" exemplifies his pioneering approach to gemstone carving and his deep connection to the Copper-rich landscapes of his home state. Growing up near Arizona's Copper mines, Standley began carving gemstones in 1971 at the age of 19, during the height of the Indian jewelry movement. As Turquoise waned in popularity, he turned to other Copper minerals-Chrysocolla and Azurite-becoming one of the first American lapidaries to explore their use as fine gemstones. This work presents a splendid example of gem silica Chrysocolla, naturally lined with well-crystallized drusy Quartz. The geode has been split and polished, with the two halves now permanently joined to reveal a perfectly symmetrical "butterfly wing" pattern formed by the mineral's wavy growth bands. "Butterfly in Stone" achieved recognition as the cover feature of Lapidary Journal (1981), in an article celebrating the revival of the lapidary arts during that decade. A historic and visually captivating work, uniting artistry and geology through the vision of a lapidary innovator who helped redefine the possibilities of American gemstone art.
