Description

Chalcopyrite
Tonglushan Mine, Daye Co.
Huangshi, Hubei
China

From a relatively new find within the last few years, these Chalcopyrite specimens have been garnering lots of attention in the collecting community. This example is believed to be one of the best and largest specimens to come out of the Tonglushan Mine in China. The original owner purchased this substantial specimen straight from the mine. The unique habit, configuration, and myriad colors of these pieces are highly aesthetic and captivating. This very attractive example is made up of dozens of different sized and colored orbs "cemented" together in a fantastic manner. This rare formation occurs in hard sandstone when cavities fill with Chalcopyrite and subsequently "bubble up" into this dramatic representation. Each ball has a different size based on how much open space is available during the formation process. Each round crystal has a sparkling aspect like glitter to its exterior shell while displaying nice luster and iridescence. This fabulous association consists of varying colors, including blue, purple, gold, and green - a Mardi Gras-themed mineral - and the spheres range in size from a pea to a grape. The largest sphere measures 0.85 inches (2.16 cm). There are a few sections on the "skin" where contact is evident, and only two sections evidence an incomplete orb. Overall, for the size, this fine example is in excellent condition. The color, form, and charm result in a highly unusual and collectible association sure to be a conversation piece in any serious display case.
Measurements: 4.53 x 2.87 x 2.75 inches (11.50 x 7.28 x 6.99 cm)

Provenance: Ex. Dr. Barratt L. Philips Collection
