Description
Chalcopyrite on GalenaJoplin Field, Jasper County, Missouri, USA
27 x 26 x 11 cm (10.63 x 10.24 x 4.33 in)
This massive, older cabinet specimen comes from the classic and long-closed Tri-State Mining district. Most of the piece is composed of hefty, intergrown, octahedral Galena crystals (up to 8.7 centimeters) that are nearly covered in dense, well-defined epitaxial growths of Chalcopyrite, giving the specimen a more rugged texture. Along with a characteristically rich brass color, the Chalcopyrite stands out with vibrant red, blue, and purple iridescence. Strewn atop the Chalcopyrite, primarily facing the right side of the display, present nicely-formed, lustrous, silvery associations of Marcasite. This piece comes with a custom acrylic base.
From the collection of Daniel "Dan" R. Kennedy.
