Description

Chalcopyrite on Fluorite
Denton Mine, Harris Creek Mining Sub-District, Hardin County, Illinois, USA
13.8 x 5.6 x 4.8 cm (5.43 x 2.19 x 1.90 in)

This Chalcopyrite and Fluorite specimen is a starry night sky captured in a moment: the large Fluorite crystal edge makes up the deep expanse that is the 'sky,' and over that the scattered Chalcopyrite crystals become the 'stars.' The Chalcopyrite crystals, in fact, are precipitated both on the Fluorite as well as being included inside it, which gives the specimen great depth. The color is a bright metallic gold. The Fluorite itself has a very elongated, geometric form, and is actually the partial edge of what used to be a giant Fluorite cube, which was etched away (because of this, the specimen is crystallized all-around, and "recrystallized" on the bottom). The body of the crystal is a consistently deep cobalt blue, which glows incredibly when backlit. There is a sharp purple zone around all of the edges. It is a classic Denton Mine hue! The underside appears to have tiny but sharp crystals of modified Galena. This piece is in excellent condition, with little, almost no bruising.
