Broken Hill Proprietary Mine (Proprietary Mine; BHP Mine), Broken Hill, Yancowinna Co., New South Wales, Australia

The giant mining conglomerate BHP got its start and its name from a remote site in central Australia: Broken Hill, made infamous by the second "Mad Max" cinema spectacular that used the area for the movie location. Notable among the many, well-crystallized minerals from this locality are the large, twinned Cerussites that were found during the early phase of mining operations at Broken Hill. At that time, large and superb specimens of reticulated crystals were crushed and smelted for their Lead value. Very rarely, examples like this one were saved from that fate by their value as curiosities, based on their exotic form. Many of those Cerussite crystal groups grew inside cavities left by other minerals as those minerals dissolved and migrated downward in the ore bodies. This specimen obviously grew in one of those cavities until it reached the limits imposed by the enclosing walls of the space as evidenced by the traces of gossan wall material on exterior surfaces. It consists of a series of "V-Twin" crystals up to 2.25 inches (5.8 cm) by 2 inches (5.1 cm) in size, all in parallel alignment. It is most likely an older specimen since pieces of this size and quality haven't come out for several decades at a minimum. It bears an accession number "61W," but with no corresponding information. Condition is excellent with very little evidence of nicks and breaks.
    Overall Measurements: 4.0 x 3.0 x 3.25 inches (10.16 x 7.62 x 8.26 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

    Provenance: Williams Minerals [Hoppel #D0517]
