Meshberger Stone Company Quarry (Jordan Pit), Columbus, Bartholomew Co., Indiana
This is proof that even the local rock quarry has potential for providing specimens worth collecting. The Meshberger Brothers run an industrial minerals business, producing such exotic commodities as 'Golf Trap Sand' and crushed Dolomite. Someone with access to one of their quarries noted this fine, doubly terminated specimen of Calcite and saved it from being turned into concrete or road metal. It shows smoky colored "phantom" areas below the warm, glassy exterior and the lustrous faces have occasional growth features of a neoplastic style, particularly on the top and front of the piece. A second doubly terminated crystal serves as a pedestal for the larger one, lifting it up for enhanced viewing access. There are a couple of minor nicks on the front and side, but overall condition is excellent.
Overall measurements: 5.5 x 3.5 x 2.5 inches (14 x 8.9 x 6.4 cm).
Provenance: Williams Minerals [Hoppel # D0260]
