Leiping Mine, Leiping, Guiyang County, Chenzhou Prefecture, Hunan Province, China

Everybody loves the uniquely distinctive Calcite twins from the Leiping Mine in China. The stark geometric forms captivate the eye with their purity of form. The really interesting question is "why do the twins grow so much larger than the un-twinned microcrystals that surround them?" The largest single crystal measures 1.25 inches (3.3 cm) long. Science will answer that question ... someday. Meanwhile, we can just accept them for what they are - mysteriously beautiful objects. Close inspection of the twins yields some surprises. For one thing - although they appear to be completely opaque when viewed from the front, viewing from the side shows that most of them are actually transparent and colorless, except for a rust red included layer on one of each crystals' planar faces. Very likely, Hematite dust slowly settled in the still waters of the cavity that they grew in, depositing a red layer, but only on those crystal surfaces facing up. For Leiping this is a large matrix specimen and the lack of damage, raises it to the upper echelon of quality for these unique Calcites
    Overall measurements: 8 x 6 x 4.5 inches (20.3 x 15.2 x 11.4 cm).
