"Butterfly Twins" is not the name of the entertainment world's latest flash in the pan, but instead describes a particular type of twinning peculiar to the mineral Calcite. This type of twinning produces crystals that look like a minimalist's vision of a butterfly, complete with two outstretched "wings." Here the pale pink "butterflies" are fanning their wings over a large mound of off-white Calcite strewn with colorless needles of the same mineral. For some reason, these Butterfly Twins always grow larger than the other Calcites covering the matrix. "Why?" is a mystery to be solved by grad students and people with NSF grant money to burn. These Calcite plates make up the walls of lava bubbles in one place in Brazil. Careful collecting preserves their delicate forms for a wider audience. Condition is excellent with no observable damage. The Calcite coated lava plate is the matrix.
