Iraí, Alto Uruguai region, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

As much as Calcite isn't a "Lava" mineral, and crystals of Calcite even less so, there are occasions when large bubbles in the Basalt flows of southern Brazil and Uruguay, play host to Calcite crystals. Some, like this group are both large and perfectly formed. Depending on your point of view, there are either: six individual crystals making up the main group or three pairs of "twinned" crystals. The angular relationships between each pair of the "twinned" crystals, argues that they are twinned. Either way, the aesthetics of the piece are irrefutable, besides the big crystals: 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) long, there are innumerable smaller ones making up the matrix of the piece. A cursory look at the bottom of the piece confirms the 'lava bubble/geode' origin: the blue-green Chamosite is unmistakable. As a lagniappe, under short wave Ultra-Violet light, the Calcites glow a fiery red, an effect due to small amounts of Manganese hiding out in the Calcite crystal structure. This beautiful specimen is in perfect condition, with complex, glassy luster.
    Overall measurements: 7 x 5 x 5.5 inches (17.8 x 12.7 x 14 cm). Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: Keith Proctor, ex. Sandor Fuss Collection [Hoppel Catalog # D1771]
