Description
CALCITEElmwood Mine, Carthage, Central Tennessee Ba-F-Pb-Zn District, Smith Co., Tennessee, USA
In the Elmwood Mine of Tennessee, open caverns were intersected by mine workings seeking Lead and Zinc ores. Those caves have revealed a glittering treasure house of aesthetic specimens, as well as ores. Most notable are the large and glassy Calcite rhombs of a warm, golden color reminiscent of honey, which are often combined with dark pyramids of Sphalerite: a valuable Zinc ore. This classic Elmwood specimen shows both of those minerals. The Calcite takes the form of a group of textbook scalenohedral crystals, up to 6.5 inches (16.51 cm) across possessing that same honey color that collectors have coveted for years. Hidden underneath the Calcite group is a matrix of dark reddish brown Sphalerite crystals of metallic luster. The terminations of the Calcite are complete and the only defects are some small dings to the body of two crystals. This piece comes complete with a custom acrylic stand. See also the 360 degree video of this specimen available online.
Overall Measurements: 10.07 x 5.7 x 5.35 inches (25.6 x 14.5 x 13.6 cm)
Offered at no reserve.
Provenance: Rep. John Culberson Collection
