Campomorto Quarry, Pietra Massa Locality, Montalto di Castro, Viterbo Province, Latium, Italy

The "Basalt" of Campomorto Quarry is a dense, hard and tough rock admirably suited for road gravel and any stonework requiring wear resistance. Bubbles in these Tephritic lava flows are sometimes occupied by perfect tan to golden spheres of Calcite. This fist-sized chunk of black Basalt bears an exposed portion of one of those bubbles. Within it are two sizable, and a dozen or so minor, spheres of just that form and color. Luster is a peculiar 'velvety' one that defies description, possibly because the Calcite is translucent, allowing light from behind the specimen to pass through the spheres. The interiors of the two major spheres have been exposed on the backside when they were broken away from the surrounding Basalt. These were found in the late 1980s.
    Overall Measurements: 4.07 x 3.41 x 2.2 inches (10.36 x 8.67 x 5.59 cm) Largest sphere is 1.25 inches (3.3 cm) in diameter.
    Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: Rocksmiths, ex. Dave & Emily Stoudt Collection [Hoppel #D0349]
