Brushy Creek Mine, Greeley, Viburnum Trend District, Reynolds County, Missouri, USA

As a sculptural composition, this Calcite group from the Brushy Creek Mine has few peers. Usually, dark opacity and a matte luster would be the 'Kiss of Death' for a mineral specimen, but here that same combination works for the specimen by emphasizing the stark form and providing a foil for the iridescent, druzy coatings of Chalcopyrite or Marcasite that are inset below the surfaces of the Calcite. From one side, the main crystal 2.49 inches (6.34 cm) looks like a minimalist rendition of a forbidding mountain peak - Changabang in the Garhwal Himalayas comes to mind. Subtle variations in the reflectivity of the matte surfaces add illusions of depth to the piece. The condition is excellent with only a couple of cleavages showing on the undersides of the piece.
    Overall Measurements: 6.75 x 4.25 x 5.25 inches (17.15 x 10.8 x 10.8 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

    Provenance: Herkimer's Crystals [Hoppel #D0044]
