Mariposa Mine, Santa Eulalia, Chihuahua, Mexico
Forty years ago, the collector market was awash in Calcites like this one. Now, only occasionally does one surface at auction. They are quite distinctive due to their black, 'phantom' cores overlain with transparent Calcite in hues of gold and red. The sharp 'dog-tooth' crystal habit is subject to damage and one this size is fortunate to have suffered only a minor amount of same. In fine condition, it measures a sizable 15 x 7 x 7 ¾ inches high.
