DescriptionCALCITE with SPHALERITE
Elmwood Mine, Carthage, Central Tennessee Ba-F-Pb-Zn District, Smith Co., Tennessee, USA
This specimen is about equally divided in focus between the twinned Calcite scalenohedron parked conspicuously on a corner of a dark matrix of shining Sphalerite crystals. The almost metallic luster of the Sphalerite is due to a very high refractive index of 2.369. As a comparison, Diamond has a R.I. of 2.435. Transparent and colorless Sphalerite would make a fiery gemstone were it not for its comparative softness and numerous cleavage directions. This specimen is in excellent condition, with only a bruise and some minor nicking, and it comes with a custom acrylic base.
