Description

Calcite on Fluorite
Annabel Lee Mine, Harris Creek Mining Sub-District, Hardin County, Illinois, USA
11.9 x 10.8 x 8.5 cm (4.69 x 4.25 x 3.35 in)

The color of this cluster is world-class, and changes slightly depending on the lighting: in warmer light, the blue takes on a slight turquoise tinge, but with an increasingly strong cool backlight, the color shifts closer and closer to cerulean or cobalt blue, with an intensifying purple core. This "ocean" of Fluorite is preferentially associated with gemmy little scalenohedrons of Calcite, some of which having a lovely peachy-yellow graduation towards the terminations of the largest crystals. This is a classic combination, and the minerals are beautifully suited to one-another to compose a highly aesthetic and impactful specimen. This is a very large example for this rare, intense coloration, and one of the largest fine examples of this color varietal in the Lillie collection. The Lillie collection was the most important Illinois collection ever assembled , and with the mines closed it will remain so.

Ex. Ross Lillie collection.
