Description

Calcite
Bethel Level, Annabel Lee Mine, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA

This huge, single scalenohedral Calcite crystal weighs an astounding 2.49 kilograms (5.5 pounds). The crystals is gorgeous, lustrous, and translucent, along with exhibiting a superb, rich amber color. As the crystal grew, it split into elegant multiple terminations, almost 2/3 of which have pristine terminations (and the ones with very small cleavages at the tips get lost in the overall look anyhow). An amazing specimen found in July 1991 and was in the Ross Lillie Collection (RCL#870) for decades until it sold a few years ago and was purchased from Daniel Trinchillo from that sale. Lillie noted on the back of his label that this was one of the specimens selected by Chicago Field Museum in an attempt at a deal (for a large group of cabinet-sized display pieces) before he sold the collection to Trinchillo instead and that it is, quote 'the largest good calcite of this style I have ever seen" from the district on the label. This tall and large example comes with a custom engraved base.

Provenance: The Collection of a Southern Gentleman, Ex. Daniel Trinchillo, Ex. Ross Lillie Collection
