Boulder Opal in Integrated Base
    Quilpie, Quilpie Shire

Not surprisingly, Opal is the national gemstone of Australia. The island continent is certainly well known for producing the October birthstone, to the tune of accounting for as much as 95 to 97% of the world's supply of the precious stone. An amorphous form of silica, Opal is so highly prized for its vibrant colors and the brilliance with which the colors "fire" when exposed to light. Australian Boulder Opals are one of the more valuable varieties and easily distinguished by the layer of solid brown ironstone on the back of the rock. In this case, veins of colorful Opal form in cracks and fissures of large ironstone boulders underground, which are then mined. Australian Boulder Opals are only found in Queensland in the Opal fields of Quilpie and Winton. This impressive specimen is rather large and has been incorporated into a rustic, custom metal base. The face exhibits large areas of exposed Opal which are smooth to the touch and have a myriad of colors including white, gold, blue and purple. The "neon" veins within the piece glow when lit properly. The surface of the Opal measures almost 7 inches (17.78 cm) at its fullest dimension. This is a highly decorative and rather interesting example of popular Boulder Opal.
    Overall Measurements: 6.8 x 5.1 x 8.3 inches (17.1 x 13.0 x 21.0 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
