Description

BERTHIERITE
Herja Mine, Chiuzbaia (Kisbánya), Baia Mare (Nagybánya),Maramures Co., Romania

Berthierite is one of those minerals that in virtually all cases, is aesthetically "challenged" to put it kindly. Microscopic crystals, ho-hum color and un-inspired form conspire to place Berthierite into the "also-ran" category of mineral contenders.

Except for this particular example, which is all that this Cinderella mineral could ever hope to be.

Multiple fan-shaped, free-standing crystal groups up to 3.5 inches (8.95 cm) in height, erupt from the dark matrix that serves as a base for the group. There are literally thousands of these crystals, all jammed up against each other and so thin that they look like iridescent fur. That is, if fur was iridescent and made of Iron, Antimony, and Sulfur. The condition of the piece is pristine with no visible damage. This may well be one of the finest examples of this mineral known.
Overall measurements: 4 x 4.5 x 3 inches (10.2 x 11.4 x 7.6 cm).

Provenance: Attard's Minerals [Hoppel # D1276]
