Minerva No. 1 Mine, Ozark-Mahoning Group, Cave-in-Rock Sub-Dist., Illinois-Kentucky Fluorspar Dist., Hardin Co., Illinois, USA

In the human drive for undying fame, one could do worse than Orlando J. Benston: ore treatment metallurgist with the University of Illinois. His name will forever be associated with a complex Carbonate mineral combining five other elements, of which Barium is probably the most significant. That Orlando was associated with the U. of Illinois was no accident, some of the finest examples of the rare combination have come from the mines of Hardin Co, Illinois. This excellent Benstonite is from one of the most renowned of that county's locations: the Minerva #1 Mine in the Cave-in-Rock District. The "matrix" is a mass of blue and purple Fluorite crystals overlain with a forest of pyramidal Calcite crystals, which in turn host white, tabular encrustations of Benstonite. There is one 'dinged' area on the periphery of the group, otherwise excellent condition. It was judged exceptional enough for it to be featured in The Mineralogical Record in 1997.
