Description

    BARYTE
Meikle Mine, Bootstrap District, Elko Co., Nevada, USA

Although the label indicates this very large Baryte specimen came from Frizington Mine in England, try as we might, we cannot accept that this came from the West Cumberland Iron Field. None of the specimens from that district match up with what this specimen looks like. Unfortunately, it matches up in all particulars with Baryte from the Meikle Mine in Nevada. What's worse, it was sold after the first Meikle Mine Baryte was discovered and specimens extracted. Having said that, we have to admit that it is a nice example of a Meikle Baryte, with lots of thick honey colored wafers up to 1.13 inches (3.0 cm) on edge, liberally covering the upper surface of a typical limonitic gossan matrix. There are a few broken areas at one end of the piece, otherwise excellent condition with great luster, form and transparency.
    Overall Measurements: 8.66 x 7.0 x 3.38 inches (22.0 x 17.8 x 8.6 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

    Provenance: Western Minerals [Hoppel #D1759]

    Estimate: $8,000 - $10,000.

While I regret my inability to personally view the work, you provided an excellent substitute for my not being able to do so, and I look forward to future Heritage auctions.
