Herja Mine (?), Chiuzbaia (Kisbánya), Baia Mare (Nagybánya), Maramures Co., Romania
Of all the colors that Baryte can show, the most exotic and rare is the deep red tint of this complex example from, most likely, the Herja Mine, where such things have occasionally been sighted before. The form is a delicate, almost flowery one that is more like an organic growth than something from the mineral kingdom. Baryte crystals arranged in random linear fashion wander all over the upper surface of the piece like a thousand tiny Mohawk haircuts. The color is a deep red with orange undertones that is very unique. It is theorized that the color is due to included Realgar, which could certainly account for the color. It is difficult to notice but there are a couple of dings that can be spotted after diligent search. Actually the condition is excellent based on aesthetics. Comes with a custom acrylic base.
Overall measurements: 4 x 3.5 x 2 inches (10.2 x 8.9 x 5.1 cm).
Provenance: Keith Proctor [Hoppel # D0428]
Estimate: $5,500 - $6,500.
