Frizington, West Cumberland Iron Field
North & Western Region (Cumberland), Cumbria
    England, UK

This rather large grouping of Baryte was mined prior to 1893. Made up of a number of stout Baryte crystals up to 3.5 inches (8.7 cm) across and 0.63 inch (1.6 cm) in thickness arranged in a random fashion on a matrix of rust red iron-infused Calcite crystals, the Baryte exhibits tints from colorless to light blue with reddish inclusions from iron staining. Several of the crystals show some damage, probably incurred during removal from the mine. An accompanying label from Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History attests to the purchase from Ward's in 1893. Condition is good for the material for this mine and era. All in all, this is a very impressive example of a museum-size Baryte from an all but forgotten mining district in central England. This piece also comes with a custom acrylic base for convenient installation.
    Overall Measurements: 9 x 6.75 x 8 inches (22.9 x 17.1 x 20.3 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: Ex. Field Museum of Natural History, ex Ward's, Hoppel Collection

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
