Frizington, West Cumberland Iron Field, North and Western Region (Cumberland), Cumbria, England, United Kingdom

Once the British Empire was the power to reckon with. The underpinnings of all this was forged from the daily toil of miners working the "pits." Virtually all mines in the U.K. are now closed and abandoned, leaving only words, pictures and specimens like this one as the legacy of those times. Most likely mined in the late 1800's, the Baryte offered here is a product of the West Cumberland Iron Field, quite possibly the Dufton Mine. The main Baryte crystal measures a little less than 3.75 inches (9.45 cm) across its formidable bulk. That stout crystal is double terminated. In addition to the big one, there are nine or so more with similar coloring and form. The matrix is cream colored and somewhat granular, with areas iron stained red. On the bottom of the specimen are two separate collection numbers - "15" and "113625". The condition of the piece is typical for ones of the period, with several minor crystals showing breaks while the main ones being largely unmolested. There is a note on the Proctor data indicating that the specimen is repaired, but just where is in question.
    Overall measurements: 5 x 6 x 4 inches (12.7 x 15.2 x 10.2 cm).

Provenance: Keith Proctor [Hoppel # D1271]
