Frizington, West Cumberland Iron Field, North & Western Region (Cumberland), Cumbria, England, UK
The Frizington district produced both coal and iron ore during its heyday in the middle to late 1800's. While this was going on, the miners collected the odd bit of "heavy spar" as Baryte was known, along with any other crystals that might bring a few pence from the dealers in "curiosities". Obtained by purchase from Ward's in 1893, this rather large Baryte group had to have been mined prior to that. It is made up of a number of stout Baryte crystals up to ˜ 3.5 inches (8.7 cm) across and .63 inch (1.6 cm) in thickness arranged in a random fashion on a matrix of rust-red iron infused Calcite crystals of minor dimensions (8-9 mm) and nearly infinite numbers. The Baryte shows tints from colorless to light blue with reddish inclusions from iron staining. Several of the crystals show damage, probably incurred during removal from the mine. An accompanying label from Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History attests to the purchase from Ward's in 1893. Condition is good for material for this mine and era. All in all, this is a very impressive example of a museum-size Baryte from an all but forgotten mining district in central England.
Overall measurements: 9 x 6.75 x 8 inches (22.9 x 17.1 x 20.3 cm).
