Dalmellington Mine, Frizington, West Cumberland Iron Field, North and Western Region (Cumberland), Cumbria, England, UK

Completely atypical for Baryte, the elongate habit shown by this exotic specimen is far more akin to an odd form of Calcite (and there are a LOT of those) than the standard, stubby chisel shaped ones normally seen with Baryte. Elongated examples of Baryte are known from various parts of the world, but few achieve the kind of 'stretched' proportions that this example shows. Although it is only 0.75 inch (1.9 cm) in diameter at its widest, the crystal is an enormous 6 inches (10.25 cm) in length: quite different from the multi-pound monsters that are usually in the same length class. The light yellow prism is quite transparent, and the termination is atypically flat with only traces of the faces that give Baryte a normally chisel shaped termination. The locality given is somewhat misleading since the "Holbeck" Mine was only operated by the Dalmellington Iron Company, but time has a way of muddling things, and, since the mine closed in 1900, the situation and name have had plenty of time to get muddled. In spite of that, these elongate Baryte specimens are quite unique to whichever mine name you choose to utilize. There are some very minor nicks to some edges, but the piece is otherwise in excellent condition. This rare example comes with a custom acrylic base.
    Overall Measurements: 5.7 x 0.66 x 0.62 inches (14.5 x 1.7 x 1.6 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

    Provenance: Keith Proctor [Hoppel #D1827]

    Estimate: $5,500 - $7,500.
