Grube Dreislar, Dreislar, Winterberg, Sauerland, Nordhein-Westphalen, Germany

The Dreislar Mine was first opened in 1870 for Copper, Zinc and Lead, not for Baryte. It wasn't until the mid 1950's that Baryte became the desired 'ore' mineral. By 2007, when the mine closed, the workings were some 400 meters below surface, a long way to go for a heavy mineral like Baryte. Besides being a rich piece of 'ore', this hefty specimen has a LOT of crystals of very atypical form. The best description of their shape would have to be 'blades tapering to points on both ends, arranged in parallel aggregates.' The bone-white color is offset by liberal sprinklings of brassy Chalcopyrite in small 'berries'. There are a few broken crystals but overall condition is excellent with outstanding form. [Note: "Baryte" is not a misspelling - this is the approved IMA spelling for the mineral - instead of Barite that we all are used to.]
    Overall measurements: 7.5 x 4.5 inches (19.0 x 11.5 cm). Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: John Attard [Hoppel Catalog # D0028]

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]

It would indeed have been much simpler to work with a local auction house, and we had local options. But we never once regretted going with Heritage.
